They often combine a combination of recruitment methods.  We have identified 18 ways to find a job. These are discussed briefly on this page and in-depth at Recruitment Methods section.

Recruitment methods chosen by companies are directly related to the type of job vacancy, size of the company, lead time to full it and recruitment needs and expectations are a few reasons why different methods are used. Interestingly, research shows that word of mouth still comes second only to recruitment through employment agencies.

In smaller companies, word of mouth comes second to cold calling and slightly more than advertising.

While some traditional methods of finding a job are still competitive, the market is less crowded. In fact, many positions are not being filled. One need only read the number of advertisements in the paper, and listen to anecdotal information to know that traditional methods of employment have not been overtaken by the internet job boards or job banks. (recruitment sites)

What is important is that jobseekers are not tapping into a large number of potential sources of vacancies if they confine their research to internet job finding sites / job boards. Many people have grown quite lazy as a result of the ease in which they submit online job applications.

Jobseekers need to combine internet job search with traditional recruitment methods to find a job.

Your job search will follow traditional lines with 5 main activities. What has changed is the method of carrying out these activities.

    The main activities are to:-

    • Prepare a resume.

    • Conduct research to identify potential employers and sources of vacancies

    • Prepare a job search strategy through research and an action plan

    • Contact employers using several job search strategies

    • Attend interviews and follow up

You will need to develop advanced job search skills to effectively prepare and implement a job search strategy.

Most importantly, remember, your resume is a marketing document. Unless it is competitive you are wasting your time, no matter what method you choose to find a job. Your resume and supported job search documents are absolutely vital to creating the right first impression, whether you are currently unemployed, changing jobs or seeking promotion.
